“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
I substituted in a class recently where the mindfulness space, a place to calm down, was used frequently by the students. Anxiety, frustration, emotional stress in all forms is now a part of conversation with young students and adults alike in public schools. Fidgets, counseling, and a special place to calm down are a few strategies that are used to help students cope. I’m not sure how effective any of those strategies are, but I know the One who provides a haven of rest to those who seek Him in times of turmoil.
As believers, the best way to combat and reduce anxiety, fear, disappointment, and other emotional stresses is to use the Word of God. For my small group, I researched passages on fear, peace, and courage and of the nineteen verses that I chose to use, eight of those had one thing in common; God said, “I am with thee.” Knowing that God (who is enough) is with you should bring great comfort and a calm.
What passage of scripture brings you peace? My go-to verse for many years has been “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13) But in the past couple of years, I have gone to Isaiah 41:10 for comfort which includes strength from the Lord but is more inclusive of all that God has for me. I don’t have to fear because He is with me. I don’t need to be discouraged because He is my God. He will give me strength and will help me with the current situation. And if God’s presence isn’t enough, He is holding me with His powerful right hand of justice. Calm assurance and peace flows like a river when I cling to the truth that God is enough and provides me a refuge in times of trouble. My calm is in Christ and Him alone.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being my haven of rest. Without You, I would be lost and hopeless like many others are today. Thank You for the assurance that You are enough because You never leave me, You help me, and You hold me safely in Your hand. I love You and choose to seek my peace and rest from You.
In Jesus’ name - Amen.
